Emergency Gallbladder Surgery

What are the signs that require emergency gallbladder surgery?

Recovery after emergency gallbladder surgery

People who undergo emergency surgery often start from very different health situations. These differences influence how quickly the body heals, how long antibiotics are needed and how soon someone can return to normal activities.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Sudden severe right upper abdominal pain, fever, vomiting or yellowing of the skin may indicate urgent gallbladder problems. As such, immediate medical evaluation is essential.
Emergency procedures do carry higher risks due to infection or inflammation, but skilled surgeons minimise complications through careful planning and monitoring. It is hence always advisable to consider gallbladder surgery when there is no ongoing infection.
Most emergency gallbladder surgeries can be safely performed as a keyhole surgery, but severe inflammation or scar tissue may require conversion to open surgery for safety.
Hospital stay is generally 1 to 3 days, depending on the severity of the condition and recovery progress.
Patients usually start with liquids and gradually progress to a normal diet. Most people adapt quickly once the gallbladder is removed.
Most patients do not require ongoing medication once the gallbladder is removed, although antibiotics may be given during recovery.
